Seeing is Believing

Across the world, one person goes blind every five seconds. Every minute, another child loses their sight. 60% of children die within a year of going blind. There are 45 million blind people in the world and a total of 314 million people suffer from a serious form of visual impairment. In many cases, this has a serious effect on employment and education opportunities.

Yet, a staggering 75% of blindness can be avoided with the right treatment. 90% of avoidable blindness occurs in the developing world where much of our business is rooted. Standard Chartered Bank have already helped restore over a million sights and through a mixture of preventive and curative work, we are working to continue to make a difference.

In partnership with leading NGOs, eye care will be provided to 20 million people from less-advantaged areas in 20 cities across the Bank’s footprint. The care will be comprehensive - from outreach and awareness, to spectacles and surgery. It will also be sustainable, ensuring that what we do is for the long-term. To do this, USD20m will be invested between 2008 and 2013. In order to meet this commitment, the Bank will match all donations until the USD 20 million target is reached.

With your contributions, we can make a difference and bring some a bit light into someone else’s life.

In Brunei, Standard Chartered Bank works closely with the Special Education Unit of the Ministry of Education to provide equal learning opportunities for visually impaired students in schools by using funds raised to sponsor special eye glasses for low visioned students to enable them to see the blackboard as well as provide specialised learning equipment such as reading equipment and assistive technology that can transform visually impaired students suffering from low grades to high performing stars in their class. Standard Chartered Bank also supports the Brunei Darussalam National Association of the Blind by providing them with an office premise.
