I’m a risk person
I’m based in London and am a Technical Specialist in the Risk function. My work involves understanding what changes to global rules mean for market risk and capital.
I couldn’t carry on the way I was
I started to feel poorly in the first half of 2015. I was suffering from migraines and feeling extremely tired and worn out. I felt like I was getting older too quickly and decided to wind down before I fell down. It took me two months to get better, during which time I did some DIY and de-cluttering at home, visited family, played golf, went swimming and saw more of the UK – things that helped me relax and get my energy back. When I returned to work it was on a part-time basis.

Fear didn’t stop me
My managers and I devised a plan that would help me return to work while addressing my health needs. I now work part-time three days a week (Monday to Wednesday), with some flexibility built in around that according to deadlines. As with any change it was a case of feel the fear and do it anyway.
How I balance it all
The important thing is not to overcommit and to retain a flexible attitude. For example, I choose to catch up some Sunday evenings and make occasional calls on Thursday and Friday where necessary, to make sure I’m on top of things.
It didn’t damage my career
I feel I have moved on to the next step in my career and that flexible working has allowed me to develop in a way that suited me.
