Green Skies: sustainable finance in aviation

Standard Chartered and Etihad Airways led the way in transitioning the aviation sector to net zero carbon by launching the world’s first transition sukuk. The USD 600 million sukuk will allow Etihad to align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals in its carbon reduction targets, by investing in the next generation of fuel-efficient aircraft and developing the use of biofuels.

This is the first sustainability-linked sukuk for the aviation sector, and the first combined use-of-proceeds bond and sustainability-linked bond in any sector. Novel sustainable financing arrangements like these are driving innovation in the technology that will help us transition towards a net zero future. Find out more in this video.
