My family commute: Jun Young Park’s story

My family has a very special relationship with Standard Chartered as my wife, my son and I all commute to and from the office together each day.

I joined the bank in 2009 as an entry level hire and worked in the Retail Bank branches before moving to Head Office. I currently manage Retail Banking projects in the Client Experience, Process & Governance team. I actually met my wife while working in one of our branches and we are now proud parents.

Our lovely three-year-old son currently attends the Standard Chartered First Star Daycare Center at the Head Office building. It’s been about a year since our son started to attend the workplace daycare center and my wife and I see so many benefits. Firstly, it’s open for long hours so that relieves some stress about our working hours. They can also provide dinner for him if we are running late. Secondly, it’s a huge help financially as we don’t have to hire a separate nanny. But for me, the best part is the extra time we get to spend together. Our commute gives us more time to talk to each other, which strengthens our family bond.

I believe the Bank, through its culture, respects the work-life balance of its employees. I know plenty of colleagues who are also parents that take advantage of our flexible working policy. For example, they may start work later in the day to allow for school drop off, or to get to the doctor’s surgery. It’s one less thing for parents to worry about.

Here in Korea, parents who are returning to work after parental leave are also offered shortened hours. This gives parents the opportunity to work four hours a day, allowing plenty of time for nursery drop off or pick up. It’s a great way to ease parents back into the workplace at a time when they need extra support.

What makes Standard Chartered special is not only that these options are provided for parents, but that they are actively encouraged to embrace them. Flexibility helps keep my family happy and healthy and I couldn’t ask for more than that.
