Standard Chartered Mauritius celebrated its tenth anniversary in May 2012, hosting a series of activities to reinforce the Bank's support for Mauritius as a gateway for Africa to Asia and our commitment to support the local communities.
A press briefing was hosted by Mike Rees, Group Executive Director and CEO for Wholesale Banking, Neeraj Swaroop, Regional CEO, South East Asia (excluding Singapore) and Sridhar Nagarajan, CEO for Standard Chartered Mauritius, to share with the media the significance of Standard Chartered's presence in Mauritius. Mike highlighted the economic, political and financial turbulence in the world today, and how Mauritius and Standard Chartered both have strong fundamentals to seize the opportunities as they arise.
At a gala dinner, hosted by Mike and helmed by the Honourable (Hon.) Xavier Luc-Duval, Vice Prime Minister, and Minister of Finance and Economic Development for Mauritius, Mr Duval highlighted the Bank's contribution to the country, "I thank Standard Chartered for being very participative in the local banking sector and specifically active in promoting Mauritius overseas, particularly in Africa." The event was attended by over 150 guests including ministers and the Governor of Mauritius Central Bank, Mauritius International Advisory Board members and key executives in the industry.
As part of the celebratory activities, Standard Chartered also signed a four year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Hon. Vasant Bunwaree, Minister of Education and Human Resources, and the Optical Association of Mauritius, to support the Mauritius National Vision Screening Campaign. The Bank will donate 500 pairs of spectacles for needy school children and, through employee volunteering, provide resources to screen the eyesight of approximately 30,000 primary school children nationwide. During the MoU signing ceremony, the Minister thanked the Bank for its commitment and efforts to collaborate in this tripartite programme.
To support the Mauritian football community and youth, the Bank leveraged our Liverpool FC sponsorship to organise a football coaching clinic with John Barnes, a key legend of Liverpool FC, for aspiring footballers. The Minister of Sports, the Hon. Satyaprakash Ritoo, was present to support the event which was attended by over 85 football players.
The celebratory activities have enabled the Bank to highlight its long term growth in Mauritius and commitment to the development of the country.
