Overseas card usage: Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Why will the overseas usage on ATM, debit and credit cards be disabled?
The disabling of overseas usage on all cards serves to provide a higher level of security for all cardholders, and is part of a recent industry-wide measure introduced by the Association of Banks in Singapore.

Please note the overseas usage function on certain cards held by certain cardholders have been automatically enabled for their convenience. You will receive a written notification or SMS from us if your cards have been automatically enabled for overseas usage.

Overseas Usage deactivation on your credit card(s) will only disable overseas ATM cash withdrawals and overseas POS magnetic stripe transactions. POS EMV chip transactions on your credit card(s) are not affected.

  2. What are magnetic stripe transactions?
Some countries still use the magnetic stripe on the back of your card to process point-of-sale (POS) transactions instead of using the EMV chip. You will need to activate your card for overseas POS magnetic stripe transactions in order for such overseas POS transactions to be performed successfully.

  3. What countries do not use the EMV chip?
Merchants in countries like the UK, Europe, Australia, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Malaysia may or may not accept the EMV chip. Merchants in the US and South Korea are still reliant on the magnetic stripe to process their credit/debit card transactions. In Japan, the EMV chip is only partially implemented.

  4. Are there any overseas transactions that do not depend on magnetic stripe and are not affected?
All point-of-sale (POS) EMV chip based transactions and online transactions will not be affected by this change.
