Sustainability

The Bank views Sustainability in a four-pronged approach: Governance, Economic, Social and Environment.

  • We continually look for ways to minimize our direct impact on the environment.
  • In 2011 the Bank invested US$120,000 to improve access to water through construction of ten bore holes.
  • This project has benefited ten communities and reach approximately 5000 number of people.
  • We continue to ensure all our financing is in alignment with relevant position statements and Equator principles.

Seeing is Believing (SiB)
  • Since 2003, we have reached over 1 million people in Sierra Leone with essential eye care through Seeing is Believing. In 2012, we formally announced our $1Million Phase V Type 1 Project, of our Seeing is Believing Initiative in Sierra Leone.
  • This project seeks to improve the overall eye health care and is dubbed "Comprehensive Eye Care in Sierra Leone". It will contribute to the reduction of avoidable blindness and vision impairment through country wide provision of comprehensive eye care (CEC) services, targeting over 2,300,000 people over the four year project duration.
  • In January 2013 our $1Million Phase V Type 1 Project, of our Seeing is Believing Initiative was formally launched in Sierra Leone. The Management Team and the Seeing is Believing Committee members represented the Bank at the event, where the CEO delivered a Statement on behalf of the Bank.
  • A 2-days workshop was also held for implementing stakeholders to facilitate a better understanding of the 4 year project and its requirements.
  • In July 2013, a cross section of EXCO embarked on a Project Site Visit at the implementing partners' location, also conducting skilled-based volunteering with regards to overall governance project oversight. The team included, the CEO, CIO, Acting CFO, Acting Head of Branch Banking, and Head of Corporate Affairs; and skill set ranged from governance, project management, budgeting & finance, patient/customer care and sustainability. The team noted that the project is on track to meet its objectives especially in the areas of screenings, surgeries and glasses distributed.

Living with HIV/AIDS
  • Since the inception of the Bank's Living with HIV initiative in 2006, over 30,000 people have benefited through training including customers staff, SCB staff and students.
  • As part of World Aids Day Celebration in 2011, the Bank partnered with National AIDS Secretariat and invested US$13,900 towards the fight against HIV and AIDS in Sierra Leone.
  • The Team launched its external 'LwHIV' education programme in September 2013 and trained over 200 miners of the London Mining Company at their Marampa Mine Site in Lunsar – Northern Sierra Leone in H2 2013.

Nets for Life
  • Through our anti-malarial partnership with Nets for Life, we have bought benefit to over 2 million people across the country since 2007.
  • Over 507,000 treated nets have been distributed under the Nets for Life initiative across the country.
  • There is a 45% reduction in malaria morbidity across board in areas covered by Nets for Life.

Governance
  • The Bank ensures staffs meet customers' needs in line with the dictates of Basel II accord, the Customer Due Diligence (CDD) process and the Anti-Money Laundering (AML) law.
