Living with HIV

The HIV/AIDS pandemic is a global challenge faced by Standard Chartered as a business. Our presence in developing countries, many with increasing infection rates, means HIV has a significant impact on our operations and the communities we operate in.

We respond to this challenge through our Living with HIV programme, a global policy aimed at protecting basic human rights, promoting the health of our employees and keeping the business costs associated with HIV/AIDS to a minimum.

The programme is well established and focuses on the following areas:

  • Raising awareness with our employees through training.
  • Educating local people about the prevention and treatment of HIV.
  • Strengthening our position as thought leaders in HIV/AIDS.
  • Sharing our knowledge with other organisations.

Our recognition as a thought leader on this area is reflected in our support of the Clinton Global Initiative to educate one million people about HIV/AIDS over three years. We have launched a new partnership programme to share our expertise and educational resources with organisations that want to educate their employees or members in the fight against HIV/AIDS.

In Taiwan, we partnered with AIESEC Taiwan to promote the programme. Student representatives from 15 universities acted as HIV champions to educate young students on HIV with activities and an e-learning programme. It is expected that the partnership will educate 7,000 college students on HIV by April, 2009. Standard Chartered also seeks to build a close relationship with AIESEC Taiwan in order to set a model of long-term partnership with student associations on public welfare issues.

Standard Chartered would also like to exert its influence to clients, companies, and organisations that would like to educate their members through sharing our expertise and educational resources. Such partnership is aimed to help the society learn on HIV correctly, creating a positive, fair and discrimination-free workplace for all.
