A Visionary Private Sector Partnership - Standard Chartered, Farmsecure, Nissan South Africa and ICEE deliver eye tests to more than 500 learners in Bethlehem
Bethlehem, 2 February 2012
Leading international bank, Standard Chartered, through its global sight charity fund, 'Seeing is Believing', has partnered with valued agri-sector client Farmsecure, the International Centre for Eyecare Education and Nissan South Africa, to conduct eyetesting for more than 500 learners and prescribe spectacles to those in need. The beneficiaries are based in various charitable organisations supported by Farmsecure in Bethlehem.
The bank, in partnership with ICEE and the provincial Department of Health, has already extended eye health services to more than 1 million individuals across KwaZulu-Natal.
"Farmsecure is a valued agri-sector client of the Bank, and it gives us great pride to extend support beyond our commercial finance capabilities and make a difference in the lives of individuals in the community. This partnership demonstrates the Bank's brand promise to be Here for good and Here for people", commented Standard Chartered's Regional CEO of Southern Africa, Ebenezer Essoka.
Farmsecure is an innovative participator and service provider to the agricultural industry in South Africa and Africa, supporting the growth of sustainable and profitable agricultural enterprises across the continent. "Through its innovative financing structures, Standard Chartered Bank is a valuable partner to Farmsecure and the achievement of its vision for agriculture. We believe in partnering with our bankers to add more value to the numerous charitable projects that we already support in Bethlehem. This is a meaningful partnership in action - leveraging our respective resources and capabilities, to make a sustainable difference in the lives of others," said Jerome Yazbek, Farmsecure's Group CEO.
The International Centre for Eyecare Education (ICEE) is a developmental, non-governmental organisation that works in partnership with governments, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and other healthcare organisations to bring much needed eye health within reach of people around the world.
France Nxumalo, South Africa Manager of ICEE said, "Eye sight is the key to a child's future - without adequate vision a child will struggle to achieve an adequate education and therefore be limitedin their ability to support themselves and earn a decent living in the future. Through this partnership with Nissan and Standard Chartered's Seeing is Believing Fund, we are proud to bring sight to members of the community in Bethlehem - adding to the numbers already achieved in KwaZulu Natal."
This particular sight-partnership brings a mobile eye unit to Bethlehem, which comprises a fully-converted vehicle maintained by Nissan South Africa and equipped with a qualified Optometrist, Eye technician and on-board, state-of-the-art spectacle and lens production laboratory. This specialised mobile unit enables the team to conduct eyetesting in the morning, and then produce the required number of prescription spectacles on-site, the very same day - delivering high quality and professionally manufactured spectacles without delay. The unit will be visiting 5 Farmsecure-supported projects in Bethlehem namely: Maluti Hoogland School, Graanveld School, Charlotte Theron Youth Hostel; Golden Gateway Hospice and YWAM.
