on 12 Jul 2022

Hugely popular 5k City race will be biggest since 2019

Teams of runners from firms across London taking part on Tuesday 19 July

Event’s ‘Run from Home’ challenge also taking place on same day

12 July 2022, London, United Kingdom – The now sold-out Standard Chartered Great City Race returns to London’s streets on Tuesday 19 July 2022, with its biggest entry numbers since pre-pandemic.

Teams of runners from businesses across London will set off from the Honourable Artillery Company (HAC) for a 5k challenge which takes in a loop of the City of London, passing some of its landmark features including St Paul’s Cathedral, Tower 42 and the Bank of England.

More than 5,000 participants have signed up to take part in the event, demonstrating the keenness for people working across London to return to mass participation events.

Among those watching on will be legendary England and former Liverpool FC footballer John Barnes, and former Liverpool FC Women’s footballer and the most capped woman in England’s history, Fara Williams.

In addition to the in-person race, this year’s Standard Chartered Great City Race will again include the Run from Home challenge which enables people to join in the fun and run virtually with team-mates from home or wherever they are in the world.

Hugh Brasher, Event Director of the Standard Chartered Great City Race, said “Selling out the Standard Chartered Great City race for the first time since 2019 demonstrates how much people living and working in London want to be back taking part in mass participation events and experience taking on challenges with friends and colleagues once again. The Standard Chartered Great City Race is such a wonderful way of connecting with colleagues through exercise and the fact people can still Run from Home wherever they are in the world and feel part of the event makes this event very special.”

Sonia Rossetti, Regional Head, Corporate Affairs & Brand & Marketing, Europe & Americas at Standard Chartered, said “We’re looking forward to another Great City Race back on the streets of London. It’s fantastic to see so much interest return to mass events, bringing colleagues together for a good cause.

“Entry fees raise funds for The Standard Chartered Foundation to deliver Futuremakers, a global initiative to tackle economic inequality and promote inclusion. In the UK, Futuremakers is supporting young people through education, employability and entrepreneurship programmes that will equip them with the tools and knowledge to gain and sustain a meaningful income. This is an incredibly important focus for us at Standard Chartered, and our runners are helping to support our local communities by taking part.”

The Standard Chartered Great City Race, organised by London Marathon Events (LME) will start at 19:15 on Tuesday 19 July at the HAC Grounds in the City of London. The event has become a key date in the diary for London businesses.

Every £10 of a mass event entry and £5 of a virtual event entry will be donated to the campaign.
