Standard Chartered celebrates 170 years in the UK

on 11 May 2023

11 May 2023, London – This year, Standard Chartered celebrates the 170th anniversary of its origination. It all began in 1853 when Queen Victoria granted a Royal Charter to the Chartered Bank of India, Australia and China. This new bank, whilst incorporated in London, was focused on trade across the Commonwealth. In 1969, the Chartered Bank and the Standard Bank merged.

And now, almost two centuries later, as the UK crowned a new King, Standard Chartered embarks on a new chapter in its history. Employees gathered in 1 Basinghall Avenue, the global headquarters in London, along with members of the Bank’s Board, to mark the special occasion with birthday celebrations.

Today, whilst the Bank’s name and market presence have evolved, Standard Chartered’s ability and commitment to serve clients to manage and invest their finances safely and seamlessly, and grow their wealth and their businesses with confidence, has remained constant. The Bank connects the world’s most dynamic markets, supporting people to meet their ambitions and serving the businesses who are the engines of prosperity and growth.

As part of the anniversary, the Bank is delighted to commemorate several milestones;

  • A continued commitment1 to the City of London with a lease extension on its global headquarters and planned office refurbishment to create a modern workplace.
  • Success of the annual Standard Chartered Great City Race2 now in its eighteenth year, which brings together the business community to run a 5km course taking in the capital’s most famous landmarks and raises funds for Futuremakers3.
  • Reaffirmation to the4 Business in the Community’s Race at Work Charter to improve opportunities for black, Asian and minority ethnic employees in the UK.
  • Launched5 with St John Ambulance the Health Citizens Programme in the UK, a community programme aiming to train nearly 1,700 young people in employability and leadership skills.
  • A continued partnership and sponsorship6 of Liverpool Football Club, which brings excitement and joy to so many our employees, clients and their communities.

José Viñals, Group Chairman, Standard Chartered, said: “We’re proud to celebrate our 170th anniversary in the UK. Thank you to all our employees, clients, shareholders and partners for helping us achieve this significant milestone. I’m confident that Standard Chartered will continue to make good progress executing its strategy, working with our local communities and delivering a strong financial performance in the years ahead.”
