2022 Standard Chartered Great City Race postponed due to extreme weather warning

on 15 Jul 2022

5K challenge was scheduled to take place on Tuesday 19 July, when temperatures are forecast to be in excess of 38°C

15 July 2022, London, United Kingdom – The 2022 Standard Chartered Great City Race, scheduled to take place on Tuesday 19 July, has been postponed due to an extreme weather warning.

The Met Office has issued a red weather warning for Tuesday 19 July when more than 5,000 people were due to take part in the Standard Chartered Great City Race, a 5K challenge held on a route in the City of London.

The event was planned to start at 19:15. The Met Office is currently forecasting the temperature to be around 35°C at this time.

Hugh Brasher, London Marathon Events, and Event Director of the race, said: “The health and safety of our participants is always our number one priority and as the UK experiences the current extreme heatwave, with a red weather warning from the Met Office and temperatures predicted to reach 38°C in central London on Tuesday, we believe the responsible decision is to postpone the Standard Chartered Great City Race.

“We know this will be disappointing news for the thousands of runners set to take part, but the health and safety of our participants, stakeholders, contractors, volunteers and staff will always remain our priority.

“We are extremely grateful for all the support we have received from Standard Chartered, the Honourable Artillery Company (HAC), the City of London, the London Borough of Islington, the emergency services and many others and we are working with them to find an alternative date.”

Sonia Rossetti, Regional Head, Corporate Affairs & Brand & Marketing, Europe & Americas at Standard Chartered, said “Whilst I’m disappointed that we won’t be getting together on Tuesday, the health and safety of the runners and those who support the delivery of the event is paramount. This fantastic occasion creates such a great atmosphere in the City of London, and for those who take part in Run From Home, so I’m delighted that we are working towards the option of holding the 2022 Standard Chartered Great City Race at a later date this summer.”

Due to take place on the same date, the virtual element of the Standard Chartered Great City Race on Tuesday 19 July, Run From Home, has also been postponed and registered participants will be contacted in due course.

All participants have been sent an email and an SMS message today informing them of the decision and they will be updated via email in the coming weeks with any further information on a rearranged event and their options.
