Standard Chartered launches new Corporate Banking apprenticeship scheme to reduce barriers to employment for school leavers

on 9 Feb 2022

8 February 2022, London – Standard Chartered has launched its first Client Coverage Apprenticeship Programme within Corporate Banking, which sees the removal of academic entry requirements in order to promote social mobility and attract a diverse pool of potential candidates.

The bespoke two-year programme in the UK combines the delivery of professional qualifications with on the job learning. The apprentices will have the opportunity to gain a broad and robust skillset as they rotate across several different business areas.

The new apprenticeship scheme follows the same principles as Standard Chartered’s market leading Financial Markets Apprenticeship Programme which launched last year. Both programmes identify candidates’ potential through assessment materials developed specifically for the role, enabling a holistic view of candidates’ ability without relying on academic grades.

Recruitment for both schemes focuses on attracting an ambitious talent pool amongst school leavers, engaging with disadvantaged and disengaged communities, promoting gender balance, diversity of ethnicity and socio-economic inclusion. Applications for the Client Coverage Apprenticeship Programme and second cohort of the Financial Markets Apprenticeship Programme closes on Friday 11 March 2022, with successful candidates starting in August 2022.

Torry Berntsen, CEO Europe and Americas at Standard Chartered said: “The success of our initial apprenticeship programmes in the UK have shone a spotlight on the high potential talent pool that currently exists but haven’t necessarily had an opportunity to step forward. In opening the door to early talent by identifying potential, passion, resilience and drive in candidates, we believe that we can achieve a fully diverse workforce. Academic performance alone is not a true indicator of talent, and we are proud to be a driving force that is changing the way we look at recruitment and ensuring that diversity and inclusion is at the forefront of everything we do.”

The first cohort on the Client Coverage Apprenticeship Programme will consist of four apprentices, which includes the Level 4 Investment Operations Specialist Apprenticeship. The Financial Markets programme is open to six apprentices and runs over three years, which includes completion of the Level 6 Financial Services Professional Apprenticeship.

Upon successful completion, apprentices in both programmes will be offered a role within Standard Chartered’s Corporate, Commercial & Institutional Banking (CCIB) business.
