Introducing 3D Secure, an enhanced security feature on your Standard Chartered Debit Card

3D Secure is an enhanced security feature on your Standard Chartered Jersey Debit Card.

Key benefits

  • Use your Standard Chartered Debit Card for online purchases in a more secure manner
  • No registration will be required for enabling 3D Secure
  • For merchant websites that are 3D Secure compliant, certain transactions will not be authorised without entering the One Time Password (OTP) sent to your registered mobile number. As a result, instances of fraudulent usage on your card on electronic sites will be minimised considerably.

Non-3D SecureTM transactions

Use details on the card:

Transaction gets authorised

OTP gets generated
OTP gets sent to your registered mobile number
Only if both the OTP and the card details entered are correct will the transaction get authorised

How does it work?

The 3D Secure feature offers enhanced security through an additional authentication process when you pay online with your Standard Chartered card on websites that are 3D Secure compliant. This additional authorisation step ensures that only you, as the cardholder, will have the password required to complete the transaction.

1. Shop online at any 3D SecureTM website

2. Enter your Standard Chartered card details during checkout 3. You will receive a OTP to your registered mobile number 4. Enter the OTP in the additional screen 5. Transaction completed

From October 2020, Standard Chartered has upgraded its Card systems to support the latest 3D Secure authentication technology in line with industry practice. The merchant you are undertaking your online transaction with will trigger the authentication procedure and this will determine whether you receive an OTP for every online transaction or only certain transactions based on transactional risk-based assessments. You may now see a different OTP screen for some online transactions. An example of the new OTP screen is set out below:

Keep your contact information updated

  • Please ensure that your latest mobile number is updated with Standard Chartered as this is where the OTP will be sent
  • Please ensure that you have enabled pop-up windows in your browser as you will be required to enter the OTP on a pop-up window on the payment page
  • Please note that some websites are not 3D Secure compliant and hence do not ask for an OTP to authorise the transactions. These transactions are inherently unsafe as details on the card (card number, expiry date and CVV code) are sufficient to carry out the transaction.

FAQs

  • 3D Secure is an online security feature for credit and debit card transactions that are carried out online. This feature protects you from unauthenticated online purchases as you will be required to provide a one-time password (OTP) that is sent to your registered mobile number when you make certain online purchases on websites supporting this feature. From October 2020, Standard Chartered is also ready for EMV 3D Secure, an enhanced authentication protocol that offers additional fraud protection by analysing the merchant’s contextual data and enabling risk-based decisioning, thereby only requiring cardholders to authenticate transactions deemed to be a higher risk, in turn promoting a better client experience.

  • Whether or not you receive an OTP is at the discretion of the merchant and SCB. Certain transactions might be processed without the need for an OTP. Taking into consideration your online shopping behaviour, the merchant’s profile and other factors, you will be prompted for an OTP if an additional layer of security is required.

  • 3D Secure protects you against unauthenticated online purchases as you may be required to enter an OTP that will be sent to your registered mobile number, before you can complete the online purchase. This additional authorisation step ensures that only you, as the cardholder, will have the password required to complete the transaction.
