Key Takeaways

Thank you for attending last Saturday’s webinar with Marco Iachini, Cross Asset Strategist, Standard Chartered Bank. Marco shared the bank’s view on cryptocurrencies and if it should be included into our portfolio.

Here are the key takeaways, or you can catch the replay below:

1. What has happened?

Bitcoin rallied nearly 130% year-to-date, while Ethereum gained ~450%. Central banks’ monetary easing “money printing” is amongst the factors that have driven rising interest in cryptocurrencies.

2. Why does it matter?

The price rally has triggered an increase in retail, institutional  and corporates’ interest in cryptocurrency. The launch of Bitcoin Exchange-traded fund last week was a culmination of vast interest from both retail and institutional investors. Total investments in cryptocurrencies have crossed US$ 2 trillion thus far.

3. What does this mean for investors?

Investors with high-risk appetite may be interested in building exposure to cryptocurrencies. Given the many possible scenarios and risks, we would treat any such exposure as an alternative asset with significant upside potential matched by the risk of potential complete capital loss in our view.
