Knowing the investment risks associated with each investment is important. When you invest in a unit trust, you should receive a factsheet and prospectus which details the risks involved. Some examples are (non-exhaustive):

Investment Risk
As with any investment, your investment value and dividends may go up, down or even be completely lost in extreme cases.

Foreign Exchange Risk
You should be aware that your investments can be negatively affected by foreign exchange risk if you hold unit trusts/ funds that invest in assets denominated in foreign currencies.

Potential Risks of Hedge Funds or Alternative Funds
These funds differ from traditional unit trusts in that they can undertake more risky investment strategies than traditional fund managers e.g. they may borrow to invest which can magnify potential losses.

Potential Risks of Derivatives (if applicable)
Unit trusts which invest in derivatives may have higher volatility. An investment in derivatives may result in losses that are greater than the principal amount invested. Derivatives are also subject to a number of risks including but not limited to liquidity, interest rate, market, counterparty and credit risk. It is important that you fully understand the nature and risk exposure before investing in derivatives.

Sales Charges
These are charges which are deducted from the subscription amount and paid to the distributor

Recurring Fees
Annual management fees and other administrative fees will be charged by the fund house. While you do not pay these fees out of your own pocket, they are paid for by the unit trust and incorporated into the fund price, which will reduce the return that you get.

FAQs

  • This is a general term for funds that allow an investor to pool money with other investors and are managed by a team of investment professionals, who pursue a clearly pre-defined mandate or investment strategy.

  • A mutual fund can give you instant diversification. With investment amounts ranging from USD 1,000 through lumpsum and USD 100 through the wealth builder, you can purchase a fund which invests in equity and bond markets around the world. The investment risk is spread over many securities, thus potentially reducing the volatility of your portfolio.

  • There are different asset classes in mutual funds which include equity, bonds and balanced funds. The investment returns from the different categories could vary and then there are certain fund categories that exhibit higher level of uncertainty.

  • You need to be an SCB Kenya A/C holder. Once this is done, your relationship manager will proceed with profiling you and then show you a list of offshore mutual funds that match your risk profile. You can also use the SC Mobile App to complete the investment risk profile. Once you have completed the profiling process, you will be able to view the fund options aligned to your risk rating. Alternatively, you can also submit a mutual funds subscription form in case you are unable to submit a mutual funds transaction order digitally, your relationship manager will guide you through this process.

  • Mutual funds offer the element of diversification which an investor can easily use to spread risks. Spreading risks offers a safety cushion during bouts of market volatility. We distribute diverse mutual funds in different asset allocation including equity, fixed income, and balanced funds.

  • The unit price of an investment fund on any business day can only be calculated after all the market closure and will be announced on the next business day.

  • Proceeds from a sale will normally be released in 5 – 10 business days into your settlement account after the fund house confirms the price.

  • When the market is going down, an investor may feel very tempted to sell — that’s why despite the adage “buy low, sell high”, many investors end up doing the opposite — or not put in your regular investment. However, that would nullify the strategy’s basic idea of buying more of an investment when the market falls. Dollar cost averaging is thus the ideal strategy for new investors looking to build a long-term portfolio and the wealth-builder is a great solution that adopts this investment strategy.

    • Redeeming too early: Investors sometimes lose patience or do not give the requisite ample time for an investment to provide the desired rate of return, and hence redeem prematurely
    • Investing without understanding the product: For example, equity funds are meant for the long term, but investors look for easy returns in the short term
  • Every economy and hence market go through periods of growth and recession which impact your fund’s return but only in the short-term. Over the long-term, your fund would have gone through fluctuation, but their impact would be muted because it’s the long-term compounded total return that will count at the end of your investment journey.
