Shares his career journey so far

Marwan Deemas

Marwan joined the Capital Markets team at Standard Chartered UAE as part of the graduate programme, having studied at the University of Birmingham.

Did you know you planned to return to the UAE once you had finished studying?

Yes, the UAE is home. It was where I was raised. My family and friends are here, and being surrounded by them gives me a strong sense of belonging and support. It is a place where I see both personal and professional growth.

What drew you to apply to Standard Chartered?

Standard Chartered has a strong track record in Capital Markets across high-growth and emerging markets. The Bank’s deep roots in the Middle East, Africa, and Asia offer unparalleled exposure to the region and the chance to work on diverse, cross-border transactions.

Had you always wanted to work in banking?

Yes, I’ve always been drawn to banking – I’m particularly interested in understanding the complexity of the financial system and how capital flows shape economics. Over time, that curiosity developed into a strong interest in capital markets and the role they play in connecting issuers and investors globally.

How has your career progressed since you joined us? Can you tell us about the learning and development you’ve received?

Since joining Standard Chartered, my career has developed significantly, supported by a team that consistently encourages me to take on greater responsibility and ownership of my work. Working in Debt Capital Markets has significantly broadened my product knowledge – from understanding conventional bonds and Sukuk structures to more complex instruments such as hybrid capital and ESG-labelled bonds. I have gained practical exposure to the nuances of difference issuance formats, regulatory frameworks, and market dynamics across the CEEMEA region, strengthening my ability to tailor funding solutions to a wide range of client profiles.

I have been fortunate to be mentored by some of the most senior and successful people in the industry, who have guided me in developing both the technical and commercial skills necessary to succeed in this dynamic environment.

How would you describe the culture at the Bank?

Collaborative, inclusive and growth-oriented.

What’s the best thing about working for Standard Chartered?

Exposure to both dynamic, high-growth markets and to complex, cross-border transactions. Working alongside experienced professionals who are generous with their time and insights.

Could you use three words to describe life at Standard Chartered?

Challenging, collaborative, and rewarding.

What advice would you give to someone looking to work at Standard Chartered, particularly in the UAE?

Be proactive, stay curious – take time to understand the unique dynamics of the region. Collaboration and communication are key to succeeding here.

What sort of person would succeed in your team?

Someone who would be proactive, detail-oriented, and adaptable. A strong communicator, able to build relationships with both clients and colleagues.
