Olivia joined the Bank as an intern, converting onto our graduate programme in in the Client Coverage team in New York.

Where did you study, and what subject did you study?

I got my undergraduate degree from Columbia University, where I studied Astrophysics.

Did you always know what you wanted to do when you had finished studying?

Yes – although it may not seem like it based on my major, I always intended to work at a bank. I grew up near a Space Force base with a rocket scientist father and math teacher mother, so I knew astrophysics would always be an itch I would need to scratch, but I was not convinced it would be my profession because I dreamed of pursuing a banking career in New York City from a young age.

What drew you to apply to Standard Chartered? What made the graduate programme stand out to you?

I often describe my journey to joining Standard Chartered as “fated”. During my search for an internship, I attended an information session hosted by the bank on Columbia’s campus. To everyone’s surprise, I was the sole attendee. Despite the unusual circumstances, the most senior representative from Standard Chartered present at the session decided to sit next to me and have a simple conversation. Him choosing to literally get on my level versus awkwardly presenting at me left a lasting impression on me and showcased the uniquely approachable culture at Standard Chartered. Motivated by this experience, I promptly applied for the internship upon returning home. My internship experience was exceptionally positive, making the decision to join the graduate programme an easy and natural progression in my career.

How has your career progressed since you joined us? Can you tell us about the learning and development you’ve received?

I am still early in my career, having started as an intern and now progressing as a graduate. Coming from a non-finance background, I have undergone extensive learning, akin to an academic experience, supplemented by significant mental development, particularly in relationship management because that is where my role is focused. I have taken it upon myself to shadow other areas of the bank to ensure that fundamental knowledge is there, but I also recognise the importance of learning how to form relationships with diverse individuals. The most notable growth I have experienced is in trusting myself and ability to learn.

Tell us about a project you’ve worked on that has made you proud?

I collaborated with several team members on a project we called “SCB 101,” an extensive slide deck (~80 slides), providing a comprehensive overview of Standard Chartered’s capabilities, even tailored to specific regions across the Bank’s network. Creating this deck was a significant undertaking, as nothing similar existed previously. The process involved extensive research, information verification, and coordination with teams worldwide, often requiring late nights and early mornings. Completing the project was immensely satisfying for a few reasons but particularly because I frequently create presentations for existing clients and prospects, and the new slides have proven to be highly valuable and useful. It has been gratifying to see the positive reception and widespread use of this resource by others as well. Not to mention, they’re quite visually appealing as well!

How would you describe the culture at the Bank?

As evident from my previous responses, the culture at the Bank is incredibly supportive. The leadership is both kind and patient, striking the perfect balance by also encouraging you to reach your full potential and test your limits.

Is working in banking what you expected it to be?

No, quite the contrary, and in the best way possible. Frankly, I anticipated a more negative environment where I might be overworked, underappreciated, and treated as just another cog in the machine. However, my experience has been entirely different. Everyone welcomed me warmly and offered their support as mentors, which creates an atmosphere that naturally motivates me to work hard, show up, and continuously learn.

What’s the best thing about working for Standard Chartered?

Short answer: the people. From day one, my unique background has been valued and welcomed. Everyone has been patient and encouraging as I learn the intricacies of finance and corporate life, fostering an environment that motivates me to come to work every day and keep learning. Additionally, I appreciate the opportunity to connect with colleagues worldwide and learn about different regions, even if it occasionally means late nights or early morning calls.

Could you use three words to describe life at Standard Chartered?

Multi-cultural, social, supportive.

What advice would you give to someone looking to work at Standard Chartered?

If you aspire to work at Standard Chartered, it is crucial to be authentic. This Bank attracts a dynamic and diverse group of individuals and will embrace you for who you are, whether you are a bit reserved or extremely enthusiastic about attending happy hours! Authenticity is key to thriving in and driving our inclusive and supportive culture.

What sort of person would succeed in your team?

An individual who can effectively balance focused, independent work with sociability. This person should be eager to learn, show up, willing to ask questions, and curious about understanding the underlying reasons behind processes and practices.
