A leadership journey at the intersection of talent & tech

Samyak Mittal’s journey has been defined by building capabilities where the business needs them most. Today, as Global Head of Workforce Management and Business Services at Standard Chartered, he brings together strategy, execution and scale – translating complex business challenges into solutions that are practical, impactful and built to last.

“The real challenge isn’t identifying problems, it’s building strong execution capabilities that are adaptive, flexible, and scalable,” says Samyak.

At the bank, Samyak’s role has focused on introducing niche, high-impact capabilities that directly support business execution. He currently leads four global teams – Workforce Empowerment, Cost Control & Management, Design Studio, and Deal Advisory & Research CoE. Together, these capabilities enable leaders across the organisation to make informed, data-driven decisions with clarity and confidence, while driving sustainable improvements in cost, capacity and performance.

Two enablers sit at the core of Samyak’s leadership approach: talent and technology.

When it comes to talent, his focus is inclusive and forward-looking. He actively draws from across the bank’s ecosystem that is from early careers programmes, campus hiring, and diverse professional backgrounds to bring in the right skills and create opportunities where people can grow.

Our colleagues build their careers through diverse opportunities that allow them to leverage their strengths and tackle challenges, fostering continuous growth.

Samyak believes that skills and experience go hand-in-hand. By looking across the capabilities under his remit, he evaluates the skills people bring and encourages talent to move fluidly across roles and teams. This belief in talent fungibility allows him to identify strengths and create opportunities for people to try something new.

Technology forms the second pillar of his work. The capabilities Samyak leads are deeply tech-enabled, allowing them to scale and integrate seamlessly into how the business operates. With AI and advanced tools embedded across these capabilities, his teams are equipped to operate efficiently while adapting to changing demands.

When asked for a piece of advice for his teams and those starting their careers, his advice is simple yet powerful: say yes, take risks and lean into discomfort. “When you step into unfamiliar territory, you begin to see what you’re truly capable of,” says Samyak.
