Rejoining Standard Chartered, Malaysia for a Relationship Manager career – Lim Kah Yong’s story

I began my first stint with Standard Chartered, Malaysia in 2009 after graduating from Sunway University. My first role with the Bank was within the Consumer Private and Business Banking (CPBB) team as a Relationship Manager. I quickly fell in love with the dynamic of the banking industry and I knew that my future was destined to be in finance.

What drew you to a career in banking?

Banking is at the heart of the world’s financial systems and like everything in society, it is heavily influenced by market changes. I love the fast-paced and ever-changing nature of navigating market noises and taking risks to benefit my clients. As soon as I got a taste of what a career in relationship management had to offer, I was absolutely hooked!

What has been your most memorable experience with Standard Chartered?

As the birthplace of my career in banking, I have always held Standard Chartered close to my heart. The experience I gained in my first role was the opportunity I needed to get a footing in the industry and the skills I developed laid a strong foundation for a prosperous future career in finance. I left the Bank in 2011 and re-joined as Senior Relationship Manager in 2018 and was promoted to Priority Private Director in 2022.

Since rejoining the Bank, I have had countless memorable experiences that I truly cherish. A considerable part of my role is spent developing relationships with our clients. These relationships are nurtured over a long period of time and require a lot of commitment and trust. My most memorable experience with Standard Chartered has to be when one of my top clients introduced me to his family members following their decision to significantly increase their investments with the Bank. Their decision was a direct result of my continuous effort to successfully manage their investment portfolio and I am incredibly proud that he bestowed such a level of trust in us. My work with this client led to me being presented with the Asia Achievers Award 2021, which is one of my proudest achievements to date.

How have you overcome the challenges that you have faced in your role?

The biggest challenge that I have faced since rejoining is consistently delivering on our client's targets to develop their trust in the Bank and continue investing long-term. My team and I overcome this daily challenge by utilising the latest analytical software provided by the Bank and persistently staying up to date with market trends. Although my role may be challenging, I thoroughly enjoy its dynamic and unpredictable nature. Not one day at Standard Chartered is the same, which provides for an incredibly exciting and fulfilling working life.
