A New Frame: From Relationship Manager to Investment Advisor

A portrait of Lim Kah Yong

What drew you to a career in banking?

Banking sits at the heart of the world’s financial systems and like everything in society, it moves with the markets. I love the fast-paced, ever-changing nature of navigating market noise and translating complexity into decisions that genuinely benefit clients.

I began my journey with Standard Chartered Malaysia in 2009, fresh out of Sunway University, joining the Consumer Private and Business Banking team as a Relationship Manager. I left in 2011, rejoined as Senior Relationship Manager in 2018, and was promoted to Priority Private Director in 2022. The chapter I’m most excited about started in November 2025, when I made the move to Standard Chartered Dubai and stepped into the role of Investment Advisor.

What has been your most memorable experience with Standard Chartered?

Without question: the move to Dubai and the transition into investment advisory. After 16 years in relationship management, I realised the skills that make a great Relationship Manager – deep listening, relationship capital, translating complexity into clarity are the exact same skills that make a great advisor. They just need a different frame.

I came to Dubai seeking depth. I wanted to develop genuine advisory acumen: to go beyond managing relationships and into the discipline of constructing portfolios, understanding risk frameworks, and delivering investment outcomes that clients can build their futures on.

Five months in, that conviction has only grown stronger. The breadth of client profiles here, the sophistication of the conversations, and the quality of the platform Standard Chartered provides, it pushes you to be sharper every single day.

My proudest moment from my earlier chapters remains being recognised with the Asia Achievers Award 2021, earned through the trust of a long-standing client whose family subsequently deepened their relationship with the Bank. The chapter I’m writing now, in Dubai, feels like the most purposeful one yet.

I’m glad to be part of an organisation that pushes me to grow and provide the platform for continued career development. It “Never Settles"

What makes working at Standard Chartered unique?

It’s global reach, combined with deep roots in Asia and a growing presence in markets like the UAE, creates something genuinely rare: a platform where you can serve sophisticated clients across international borders, backed by world-class wealth management infrastructure.

For someone in investment advisory, that matters enormously. You’re not just working with products – you’re working with the full weight of a trusted global institution behind every conversation.
Standard Chartered has always pushed me to grow. The Dubai move is proof that it never settles. Neither do I.
