Richard Betts, Director, Relationship Manager, Private Banking

London, UK

I’ve been with Standard Chartered for just under a year, and it feels like not only have I been given a new sports car to test drive, but I also get to fine-tune the engine.

Before I joined the bank, I’d enjoyed a long and successful career in an established market with a competitor bank, but I wanted a new challenge. This led me to my current role, which has given me the opportunity to input my knowledge and experience into a product that I know clients want and need, working alongside my talented colleagues in IT, Compliance and beyond. I feel like I’ve been listened to, so that working together we’ve built a brand new proposition for the Resident Non-Domiciled market. We still have a long road ahead, but I absolutely believe in the product and feel proud of what we’ve created.

“I’ve developed a better sense of myself with each challenge.”

Someone recently told me that I’m not a typical ‘private banker’. I don’t really know what that means, but every now and then I take a step back and reflect on how far I’ve come from being a young boy growing up in North West London. I started working in banking as a naïve 19 year-old, doing the jobs that no one else wanted. To get to where I am today, I’ve had to be tenacious, and sometimes courageous. I’ve developed a better sense of myself with each challenge, and all this knowledge has given me a sense of stewardship. I’m interested in long-term sustainable growth, not short-term fixes which I know Standard Chartered believes in too.
