When girls play on, they succeed

We're joining forces with Liverpool FC to empower girls to 'Play On' and stay in sport so they can take the skills learnt on the pitch to empower them to achieve their goals off the pitch.

Empowering girls playing sport

The advantages of playing sport are clear. From excelling in school to propelling them forward in their careers, sport has been shown to positively influence and equip young women with transferable skills such as leadership, teamwork and resilience, that will help throughout each stage of life.

What we’re doing

In partnership with Liverpool FC, we’ve launched the 'Play On' initiative with the aim to inspire, empower and educate girls to participate in sport.

Creating a supportive environment

for girls to learn and enjoy sport

Providing a platform for girls to learn life-skills

through play-based activity

Giving girls an equal opportunity

to test their sporting ability competitively

Increase visibility

of girls in football

Providing support and training

for female grassroots football coaches

Emphasising the importance of female role models

in mentoring girls in sport

The Goal curriculum is split into four modules:

BE YOURSELF: Learn communication, build self-confidence, and value what it means to ‘be a girl’.
BE HEALTHY: Learn about general health, reproductive health and hygiene.
BE EMPOWERED: Learn about rights, freedom from violence, and how to access resources and institutions in the community.
BE MONEY SAVVY: Learn about saving, spending, making, storing and borrowing money.

There are further modules focusing independence which build on Module 4 – Be Money Savvy.

Be Independent is a 12-session module teaching basic financial literacy by introducing adolescent girls and young women to themes, topics and skills related to entrepreneurship and employability.

BE INDEPENDENT: Employability
BE INDEPENDENT: Entrepreneurship

Valuable life skills can be learned on the playing field and will help empower girls for their future success. But it only works if everyone in the community is all in.

We want girls to play on

Even though sport has been shown to positively influence and equip young women with transferable skills, participation in sport during girls’ formative years drastically decreases around the world from age 14 due to a mix of social, societal, personal and cultural issues.

Goal. Getting out and learning.

Futuremakers' 'Goal' programme is a Standard Chartered global initiative to tackle inequality by promoting greater economic inclusion in our markets. It focuses especially on supporting young people aged 35 or below, helping them learn new skills and improve their chances of getting a job or starting their own business. Goal is one of the initiatives helping girls achieve their full potential for the future.

Final whistle for gender bias

Ayim assumed women became nurses and men became doctors, until her eyes were opened by the Futuremakers Goal programme. See how Goal changed her preconceptions.

Pranjal finds her Goal

Thanks to Goal, Pranjal from Sewri, India discovered her voice and her mission as a leader in equal opportunity for her and her girl friends. She now assists coaches in reaching out to other girls.

Smashing taboos with Goal

Goal helped Deepika change her mother’s mind on menstruation. That was just the first in a long line of people who needed to know the facts. Goal helped her become the leader she didn’t know she was.

Street to CEO with Goal

When Salma left secondary school in Dar Es Salaam, the future was far from certain. But with Goal’s help, this ‘street girl’ became a business owner. Now she mentors other street girls for success.
