From China to Hong Kong: Frank’s career mobility journey

Frank Zhu

Starting a career is often a mix of excitement and uncertainty, but for Frank, it was a thrilling journey of growth and discovery. After earning his master’s degree, Frank joined Standard Chartered Bank in China as a Business Development Executive. He faced new challenges and unfamiliar territory, but he saw these as opportunities to push himself further.

“Standard Chartered felt like a university,” Frank shares. “I was surrounded by amazing leaders and colleagues who supported me every step of the way. It was the perfect environment to learn and discover new opportunities.”

A career milestone: Joining the Global Mobility Talent (GTM) programme

One of the most significant turning points in Frank’s career was joining the GTM programme for Relationship Managers. This initiative opened doors for him to relocate from China to Hong Kong—a move that not only advanced his career but also enriched his personal life.

Relocating came with its own set of challenges: adapting to a new market, embracing a new role, and settling into a new city. But Frank met these challenges head-on, fueled by his enthusiasm and determination.

“Moving to Hong Kong was a game-changer for me,” He shares. “I dedicated myself to understanding my new responsibilities and adapting to the dynamic demands of being a Relationship Manager. What made it easier was the incredible support I received from my previous manager, current boss, and colleagues. They weren’t just coworkers—they became friends who made this journey truly enjoyable.”

Life and work in Hong Kong

The GTM programme has been instrumental in shaping both Frank’s personal and professional life. On a personal level, he has fallen in love with Hong Kong’s vibrant energy and outdoor lifestyle. Whether it’s dragon boat paddling, marathon running, or hiking, the city has inspired him to stay active and energized.

Professionally, working across two markets—China and Hong Kong—has been eye-opening. “I’ve gained a deeper understanding of how different markets operate,” he explained. “This exposure has taught me to adapt and thrive in diverse environments. Moving from my home country to an international banking hub has significantly expanded my career options.”

The best parts of being a Relationship Manager

For Frank, the highlight of his role as a Relationship Manager is meeting people from various industries and backgrounds. “Every interaction brings something new—a fresh perspective or an inspiring story,” he says.

Another aspect of his role that he cherishes is the recognition and rewards for top performers at Standard Chartered. “The bank goes above and beyond to celebrate success,” he shares. “From convention trips to global CEO conferences, RMs have the opportunity to travel the world and build connections globally.”

Advice for aspiring RMs considering the GTM programme

For those considering a career as a Relationship Manager or joining the GTM programme, Frank offers some friendly advice: “Be open with your line manager about your aspirations. They can offer invaluable guidance and support. Stay proactive, excel in your current role, and view every challenge as an opportunity to grow.”

From his early days as a Business Development Executive in China to thriving as a Relationship Manager in Hong Kong, Frank’s journey at Standard Chartered is nothing short of inspiring. With an open mind and a passion for growth, he looks forward to what lies ahead in his ever-evolving career.
