Alia completed an internship at Standard Chartered UAE, and then received an offer to join us full time on our graduate programme.

What is your current role?

I currently work as a Financial Markets Analyst within our Corporate Sales Team.

Where did you study, and what subject? 

I studied BSc (with Honours) in Economics at the University of Warwick in the UK.  

Did you know you planned to return to the UAE once you had finished studying? 

Yes, I always knew I planned to return to the UAE after completing my studies. It is my home country, and I have a strong sense of responsibility toward its growth and development. The UAE has made remarkable progress in establishing itself as a global financial hub, and I want to be part of that journey by contributing my knowledge and expertise to the country’s financial sector. 

Studying abroad has given me valuable insights into global economic systems, financial strategies, and innovative business practices, which I hope to apply to the UAE’s evolving financial landscape. By bringing back the skills and perspectives I have gained, I aspire to play a role in shaping the country’s financial future and ensuring its continued success on the global stage. 

What drew you to apply to Standard Chartered? 

I was drawn to apply to Standard Chartered because of its strong presence in emerging markets and commitment to innovation. As a leading international bank with deep roots in the UAE and across key global financial hubs, Standard Chartered offers the perfect platform for me to contribute to and learn from a dynamic financial environment. 

What particularly excites me is the Bank’s dedication to fostering economic development in the regions it operates in, aligning with my goal of contributing to the UAE’s financial sector. The Bank’s emphasis on digital transformation and sustainable finance also resonates with my interests, as I am keen to be part of initiatives that drive financial inclusion and responsible banking practices. 

Had you always wanted to work in banking? 

I actually didn’t know exactly where I wanted to be after university. However, after completing my internship at Standard Chartered, I gained valuable exposure to the banking industry, which ultimately steered me toward the path I am on now. The experience gave me a deeper understanding of financial markets, client relationships, and the impact of banking on economic development. 

Through the internship, I discovered that banking complements my strengths—such as analytical thinking, problem-solving, and relationship management along with strong communication skills – which has allowed me to excel in my job. T 

How has your career progressed since you joined us? Can you tell us about the learning and development you’ve received? 

Since joining Standard Chartered, my career has progressed significantly, both in terms of technical expertise and professional growth. With each month, I have taken on more responsibilities, allowing me to develop my leadership skills and contribute more strategically to the team’s objectives. 

The learning and development opportunities at Standard Chartered have been instrumental in my growth. I have participated in training as part of the graduate programme and hands-on experiences that have expanded my industry knowledge. Additionally, exposure to senior professionals and cross-functional collaboration has provided me with valuable insights into global banking trends and best practices. 

How would you describe the culture at the Bank? 

The culture at Standard Chartered is dynamic, inclusive, and forward-thinking. It is a workplace that encourages collaboration and innovation while maintaining a strong commitment to ethical and sustainable banking practices. Employees are empowered to take ownership of their work, contribute ideas, and continuously develop their skills. 

What stands out most to me is the diversity within the organisation. With a global workforce spanning multiple countries and cultures, there is a strong emphasis on inclusivity and respect for different perspectives. This creates an environment where employees can learn from one another, fostering both personal and professional growth.

Could you use three words to describe life at Standard Chartered?  

What advice would you give to someone looking to work at Standard Chartered, particularly in the UAE?  

My biggest piece of advice would be to embrace adaptability and continuous learning. The financial sector here is dynamic and competitive, requiring professionals who can think critically, problem-solve, and navigate a rapidly evolving market. 

Networking is another important factor. Engaging with professionals in the industry and connecting with current employees can provide valuable insights and open doors to potential opportunities. Additionally, being proactive in seeking learning opportunities—whether through internships, certifications, or industry research—will set you apart. 

Finally, Standard Chartered values individuals who bring fresh perspectives and are willing to challenge the status quo. Demonstrating a problem-solving mindset, a commitment to innovation, and a willingness to contribute to the Bank’s long-term vision will make a strong impression.
