Embarking on a career in the banking sector can be both exciting and rewarding, especially when you find yourself in a dynamic environment like Standard Chartered.
Meet Maggie who joined as a Branch Manager in Shanghai and navigated to the world of International Banking in Singapore. She shared her inspiring careers experience and her journey with us.
Why did you choose to be a Relationship Manager?
I chose to become a Relationship Manager because I am passionate about building strong client relationships and providing tailored financial solutions. The role allows me to directly impact clients’ financial well-being while leveraging my analytical and interpersonal skills. It’s a perfect blend of strategic thinking and personal interaction, which I find incredibly fulfilling.
What do you like best working as a Relationship Manager in Standard Chartered?
Being a Relationship Manager in Standard Chartered is nothing short of dynamic, engaging, and impactful. I like the exposure, opportunity and diverse experience provided by the Bank.
I began my journey with Standard Chartered as Branch Manager in Jan 2018, driven by a passion for finance and client relationships. Over the years, I’ve embraced various roles that expanded my expertise and leadership skills. My dedication to client success and continuous learning led to my relocation to Singapore through the Global Talent Mobility Program, where I have thrived as offshore Relationship Manager in a dynamic International Banking hub.
Can you share a little-known fact about working at Standard Chartered?
One aspect of working as a Relationship Manager at Standard Chartered that might surprise outsiders is the level of collaboration involved. While the role is client-focused, success often hinges on working closely with colleagues across various departments to deliver comprehensive solutions, fostering a strong sense of teamwork.
Can you share your experience participating in the Global Talent Mobility program please?
Relocating to Singapore through the Global Mobility Talent program has been transformative for me both personally and professionally. Personally, it has broadened my cultural understanding and adaptability. Professionally, it has expanded my network and exposed me to new market dynamics, enriching my strategic thinking and problem-solving skills. This experience prepared me for leadership roles, including my promotion to People Team Leader in July 2024.
What was the most valuable learning from participating in the Global Talent Mobility program?
The most valuable experience from the program was working in a multicultural setting, which enhanced my communication skills and ability to manage cross-cultural teams. This experience was further enriched when I recruited a Relationship Manager from SCB China to join my team in Singapore. This recruitment brought fresh perspectives and skills to our team and underscored the importance of diversity and global collaboration in achieving success.
What challenges did you face when you worked in a different role and market, and how did you overcome it?
One significant challenge I faced was adapting to regulatory differences and market practices in Singapore. The bank provided comprehensive training and mentorship, which helped me navigate the new environment effectively. As a People Team Leader, building a cohesive team in a new market was another challenge. The bank’s support in terms of resources and guidance was instrumental in overcoming this hurdle.
How did the Global Talent Mobility program help you in your career growth?
Moving to the international banking hub in Singapore opened new career opportunities. It exposed me to a wider range of financial products and services and allowed me to work with a more diverse client base. This move also positioned me for leadership roles within Standard Chartered’ s global network. As a People Team Leader, I’ve had the opportunity to shape and lead a high-performing team, further enhancing my leadership capabilities.
What advice would you give to Relationship Managers (RM) aspiring to join the GTM program?
For Relationship Managers considering applying for a role in the program, I would advise embracing continuous learning and being open to new experiences. Building a strong network within the bank and seeking mentorship can provide valuable insights and support. Preparing for such opportunities involves being adaptable, culturally aware, and proactive in seeking out development opportunities. Understanding the value of diversity and being prepared to lead and integrate talent from different markets can significantly enhance team performance and personal growth.
Embarking on this international journey with Standard Chartered has been an enriching experience, filled with growth opportunities and invaluable lessons. As Maggie continues to navigate the world of international banking, she’s excited about what lies ahead.
