Shares how the programme strengthens and collaboration

Neeraj and Ketan

The International Buddy Programme, initiated by the Black and African Talent working group, was set up to support colleagues when they relocate to a new market with the Bank.

Piloting in Hong Kong, Singapore, the UAE, US and UK, the programme leverages Talent Marketplace to matches an arriving buddy with a host buddy  with similar lived experiences with the aim of helping them to settle quickly into life in their new location. We speak to Ketan Mehta (KM) who moved to Hong Kong, and Neeraj Rastogi (NR), who volunteered as Ketan’s host buddy, to hear how the programme has helped them collaborate in learning about and navigating the financial hub, while building invaluable connections.

Q. Ketan, as someone who has relocated to Hong Kong, how has the International Buddy Programme helped you cope with your new environment?

KM: The main thing which worries anyone relocating to a new market is getting used to the basics of life – food, communication, commuting, housing. Neeraj was an effective guide from Day 1 in helping me get the basics done. I am grateful for how he supported me during my first few days in Hong Kong as I navigated an unfamiliar city – he truly was my human Google!

Q. Neeraj, how has your experience in supporting Ketan settle in helped you grow?

NR: Having moved to Hong Kong myself some years ago, I understood the challenges colleagues like Ketan may face in adapting to a new city and culture. Sharing practical tips, such as on navigating public transport and recommending the city’s hidden gems, helps one to settle in more quickly. In turn, Ketan’s curiosity and questions have inspired me to explore Hong Kong more myself. These shared experiences not only deepened our connection, but also demonstrated the value collaboration and mutual learning.

The programme has shown me how knowledge grows when it is shared and how this can spark meaningful conversations that strengthen teamwork and inclusion. Beyond the individual impact, such exchanges contribute to an inclusive workplace where diversity in ideas is valued, and colleagues feel mutually supported in their wellbeing, particularly as they adjust to change.

Q. How has the programme helped you feel more included in your new market and workplace?

KM: The programme has helped me better integrate to both social and professional networks in Hong Kong. Respecting, accepting and thriving in a new culture is a key part of international relocation, and this is much easier with the support of a buddy on the ground.

NR: The programme is a fantastic way to help new colleagues feel welcomed and included as they transition into a new market and workplace. By connecting them with experienced hosts, it creates a supportive environment where questions are encouraged, and challenges are tackled together. These interactions go beyond settling in – they foster genuine connections that strengthen teamwork and understanding.

Q. What would you say to encourage our colleagues to participate in this programme?

KM: Please do not hesitate in reaching out for a buddy at the workplace when you have just relocated. Be bold in asking for help as this is a step towards prioritising your mental wellbeing. Despite living in this digital age, we all still need interpersonal relationships and authentic connections to grow and thrive at work.

NR: The programme offers a two-way learning process. Host buddies develop valuable soft skills, like coaching, while gaining fresh perspectives into their home markets; beneficiaries build confidence and gain supportive networks as they acclimatise. These connections often evolve into lasting relationships, enriching both personal and professional lives.

Neeraj’s Top 3 Tips to Being a Buddy

#1 As a host buddy, be approachable and proactive. Small gestures, such as accompanying your buddy to key locations in the office or sharing apps for navigating the city, can make a big difference.

#2 As a beneficiary buddy, embrace the opportunity with humility and enthusiasm. Do not be embarrassed to ask questions or get advice and recommendations.

#3 Participate in the programme with an open mind. Be curious about the different cultures, views and experiences that each of you bring with the end goal of open, respectful dialogue. Above all, enjoy the experience and have fun!
