Veena’s story – Social hibernation, a complex market and facing the introvert in me

I joined the Bank back in 2008 at an entry level position, bright eyed, curious, and eager to learn and grow. Looking back, these 15 years have been filled with many opportunities, but the one that stands out for me is my recent short-term international assignment in Sri Lanka in 2022.

After two years of pandemic led burnouts and the COVID induced social hibernation, I put my hand up for a new challenge, in a new market, Sri Lanka.   I still vividly remember the anxiety and excitement on my first day in Colombo.  I knew nothing about the new market, was uncertain about how my interactions would be like, and the introvert in me was aghast at the thought of face-to-face interactions after the long COVID-led social isolation.

As luck would have it, my landing in Sri Lanka also coincided with the further worsening of the country's economic and political conditions. From extended power cuts to fuel queues to shortage of necessities, everything was difficult to access. And on some days, I witnessed violence, extended curfews and also, teargassing.  Wonder what made me stay on when I had a chance to leave?

Working with Standard Chartered and never having to look back

15 years is undoubtedly a long time, and I can confidently say that it’s the culture and the growth opportunities that kept me glued in. When I reflect on my short-term assignment in Sri Lanka, it’s the people and culture that brushed away my fears of safety & settling in, and made me feel at home, allowing me to focus on the critical work deliverables. Teams stuck together during good and bad times, always backing each other up, which reflects on who we are at the Bank. I will always retain the resilience, willpower, and the willingness to stay positive in tough situations that I imbibed from my colleagues. Safety took center stage and I have tons of people to thank for the support they showed towards me, leaving no stone unturned to ensure my safety!

This STA could not have come to me at a more opportune time, and I gained far more than I had bargained for. Soon after my return, I embarked on a new journey, taking on the complex role of Principal Officer, Retiral Trusts – South Asia. This move once again reiterates my trust that if one is passionate about relentless learning and growth, Standard Chartered Bank is the perfect place to be in.

A big shout out to the brilliant leadership that coached me well and the opportunities that enabled me to consistently move beyond comfort zones.
