What matters most working at Standard Chartered

Geoff Haeckler, Associate Director tells us what really matters to him working at Standard Chartered

How have you got to where you are now in your career?

I studied in France and Germany and started with a bachelor’s in economics to finish with a master’s degree in finance (specialised in Risk Management). Following my Master’s I worked for three years in the compliance department of a French-German bank in Frankfurt as I wanted to get international experience after my studies. I then joined Standard Chartered Bank in July 2022 in the Conduct, Financial Crime and Compliance (CFCC) Advisory Department.

What drew you to a career in banking?

As far as I remember, I have always been interested in the economic and financial market, this is the reason why applied for a master’s in finance after my bachelor’s degree. The different experiences I had in different banks and departments confirmed my interest in pursuing a career in banking.

What’s been your most memorable experience with Standard Chartered?

The volunteering day I had with my CFCC colleagues. I got to learn about my colleagues outside of our daily jobs which was a nice experience. It helped to tighten our relationship in the team.

Could you use three words to describe life at Standard Chartered?

Challenging, co-operative, and rewarding.

What’s the best thing about working for Standard Chartered?

The unique global network.

What makes working at Standard Chartered unique?

The diversity of the people that make up the Bank's 80k+ employees around the world.

What’s the best career advice you’ve ever been given?

Do what seems right to you and stick to your core values.

Give us an example of how you live by Standard Chartered’s values - doing the right thing, better together and never settle?

From our three core values, my favourite one is definitely 'better together'. The Bank reminds us, that 'alone we go quicker, but together we go further' and we see  this through our processes on a day-to-day basis, but also through the different volunteering projects where different participants around the world support each other.

How should someone prepare for an interview with Standard Chartered?

Be curious, have an interest in the Bank – look at our client base, different areas and branches through the world.

What’s your professional and personal goal for 2024?

Professionally my goals are to keep growing as a CFCC specialist by learning new skills and being able to apply it in my daily business. Personally, I want to keep being the best version of myself through sport but also by engaging further in volunteering projects (in nature or humanitarian) and learn more about myself as a human being.

Do what seems right to you and stick to your core values.

How do you like to spend your free time?

I like to spend my free time by doing cultural activities such as visiting museum, going to a music concert, but also reading some books and enjoying my sport routine.

Is there anything people don’t know about you?

I really like challenges and I like to try new activities. I hate losing even at board games!

Are there any skills you’re trying to learn?

Yes – hold the distance to perform for a half marathon!

What’s the best part of your daily routine? Tell us something people don’t know about you?

The best part about my daily routine is being consistent and seeing the results.
