Mrs. Maria Kiwanuka was appointed an Independent Non-Executive Director for Standard Chartered Bank Uganda effective April 2021.
Mrs. Kiwanuka is a senior economist with 14 years’ experience at the World Bank, where she focused on East Asia, Southern Africa and Uganda and took part in a number of projects aimed at improving transport and power infrastructure as well as urban studies, among others. She served as the Minister of Finance Planning and Economic Development of Uganda from 2011-2015 and thereafter as a Senior Advisor to the President of Uganda on finance matters.
She is a non-state expert in the 17-member governing council of the Global Green Growth Initiative, an intergovernmental organisation which aims to promote a green growth paradigm to balance macro-economic growth objectives of member nations.
Mrs. Kiwanuka is the founder and General Manager of Radio One and Radio Two in Uganda as well as the founder/member of the International Africa Media Leaders Forum. She also previously served as Vice Chairperson of the Local Government Finance Commission and the Chairperson of the Uganda Registration Services Bureau, the Presidential Investment Round Table (Business Climate) and United Bank of Africa. She additionally served as a Board member of Stanbic Bank Uganda from 2009 to 2011.
Mrs. Kiwanuka graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce from Makerere University and a Masters in Business Administration from the London Business School.
Mr. John Bikalemesa Muhaise is an Independent Non- Executive Director of Standard Chartered Bank Uganda and was appointed to the Board in June 2014.
He is a financial and management consultant at Big Drum Advisory Services, a consultancy he formed to promote Investment in Africa. He is an astounding Auditor and was a Partner at Ernst & Young where he advised in areas of project management, raising capital, institutional developments, tax planning and diagnostic studies for over 20 years.
Mr. Muhaise boasts of 37 years of experience as an Auditor and has worked closely with the public and private sectors as well as Non- Government Organisations (NGOs) in Uganda and the greater Sub- Saharan Africa. He has also developed the Millionaires Highway Program aimed at guiding people in reprogramming their mindset to becoming happy and successful in life.
Mr. Muhaise is a Fellow of the Association of Chartered and Certified Accountants (FCCA) (UK), a member of Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators (ICSA) and is a member of the Institutes of Certified Public Accountants of Uganda (CPAU), Kenya (CPAK) and Rwanda (CPAR).
Mr. Matthias Nalyanya is an Independent Non- Executive Director of Standard Chartered Bank Uganda and was appointed to the Board in August 2017.
He is an Advocate of the High Court and all Courts of Judicature in Uganda, having been admitted to the bar in 1992. He is the Founding Partner and currently Managing Partner of M/s Lex Uganda Advocates and Solicitors, one of the leading law firms in Uganda. He is also Notary Public.
He has broad experience in corporate governance. He is a member of the Board of Governors of Namilyango College and the Chairman of the Parents Teachers Association of the same College.
He is member of the Executive Committee of Kampala Club Ltd. He is also a member of the Board of Directors of Radio Sapienta Limited. He belongs to a number of professional societies including the Uganda Law Society, East African Law Society, International Bar Association and the London School of Economics – Uganda Society
Mr. Nalyanya holds a Bachelor of Laws degree from Makerere University, Kampala and a Diploma in Legal Practice from the Law Development Centre, Kampala. He also holds a Masters of Law (LLM) Degree in Commercial Law (International Tax Law, Law of Multinational Enterprises, International Business Transactions and Alternative Dispute Resolution) from the London School of Economics, University of London. He also has a post-graduate Diploma in Tax Law and Practice from the East African School of Taxation, and various professional certificates in law and corporate governance.
Eng. Dr. Dorothy Kabagaju Okello was appointed to the Board of Standard Chartered Bank Uganda as an Independent Non-Executive Director in September 2018.
Dr. Okello is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, College of Engineering, Design, Art and Technology (CEDAT) at Makerere University. She is also a researcher with netLabs!UG, a regional solutions provider in innovative telecommunication and networking technologies.
In addition, Dr. Okello is the Director of Innovation at ResilientAfrica Network, Makerere University, a USAID supported collaboration of 20 Sub-Saharan African universities led by Makerere University in partnership with the Initiative for Disaster Resilience and Humanitarian Affairs – Elliott School of International Affairs at George Washington University, Stanford University and the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS).
Dr. Okello is currently the Board Chairperson, Uganda Communications Commission. She has also served as Chairperson of the Governing Council of the Uganda Institute of Information & Communications Technology (UICT) for 3 years, as President of the Uganda Institution of Professional Engineers (UIPE) for 2 years, and as an inaugural member of the National Board of Action Aid International Uganda (AAIU) for 4 years.
Dr. Okello holds a Bachelor of Science in Engineering (Electrical) from Makerere University, a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Kansas, United States, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Electrical Engineering from McGill University, Canada.
Mr. Ian Fernandes is a Non- Executive Director of the Board of Standard Chartered Bank Uganda.
He heads Strategic Initiatives, Projects and Governance for Africa and Middle East (AME) and is based in Dubai. Ian plays a key role in enabling and executing the Bank’s strategy for Africa and Middle East, areas around governance, conduct, risk management and audit, cost efficiency initiatives and managing specific projects for the Region including the launch of a full digital bank across Africa and expansion into new strategic markets like Saudi. Ian is a Director on the Boards of SCB subsidiaries in Tanzania, Uganda and Cote d’Ivoire and a member of the AME Regional Management Team.
Mr. Fernandes has been a part of SCB for the past twelve years and has worked in senior roles across multiple businesses and governance functions. Till 2015, he was part of Standard Chartered Private Equity, identifying investment opportunities across sectors with specific focus on financial services and consumer sectors. Earlier Ian oversaw strategy and governance for SCB in South Asia including India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Nepal. In an earlier role in Retail Banking, he was responsible for developing and driving the Priority and Preferred Banking proposition in India.
Before joining Standard Chartered Bank in 2008, Mr. Fernandes handled various roles in product management and marketing for Unilever and TATA Teleservices in India.
He completed his undergraduate studies in Electronics and Telecommunications engineering and graduated from INSEAD with a Masters in Business Administration. He has also completed a program with Stanford GSB on Corporate Innovation.
Mr. Kariuki Ngari is a non-Executive Director for Standard Chartered Bank Uganda Limited and the Chief Executive Officer for Standard Chartered Bank Kenya.
Mr. Ngari is an accomplished career banker with over 23 years of retail banking experience. He earned his recognition through successfully transforming the consumer banking divisions of Standard Chartered Bank Kenya and Standard Chartered Regional Africa.
As a seasoned financial professional, he has held various senior leadership roles across the industry. Prior to his current role, he was the Global Head, Retail Distribution for Standard Chartered Bank in Singapore. There he was instrumental in formulating global strategies in building the future of Retail Branch and Voice & Virtual landscapes through digitization of the physical channels, as well as revision of branch models and standards.
Prior to his Global role, Mr. Ngari was the Regional Head of Retail Clients Africa between 2013 and 2015, and the Executive Director Kenya and East Africa from 2009 to 2013. He has also held senior positions in Barclays Bank of Kenya Limited.
He holds a Bachelor of Arts (HONS) in Economics and Sociology from University of Nairobi and has participated actively in various professional courses including Senior Management Courses in GIBBS Business School – South Africa, SAID Business School, London Oxford, INSEAD Business School Singapore.
Prior to this appointment, Sanjay was the CEO of Standard Chartered Bank in Tanzania. In his former role as the CEO, he was fundamental in driving significant business transformation and won accolades for strong leadership. He is credited with enhancing business performance, building and optimising human capital, championing responsible business and sustainability, driving digital integration and innovation and being a force for good for national and global prosperity.
Sanjay has enjoyed a stellar career having joined Standard Chartered Bank Tanzania in 1999 as Manager, Business Finance and Support, where he served until 2001 when he took up the role of Regional Finance Manager Africa on international assignment in the UK. Over the years, Sanjay has held other senior roles in multiple markets across the Bank, key among them are Finance Director for Standard Chartered Bank Tanzania and Executive Director, Finance in Ghana including Area CFO for Ghana, Gambia, Sierra Leone and Cote d’ Ivoire. Until his appointment as CEO for Standard Chartered Bank Tanzania, Sanjay was the Head FSSC (interim) for India, as well as Head, Finance Operations & Change Management for Africa.
Sanjay’s professional credentials and qualifications include being a Chartered Accountant through NBAA Tanzania, a Fellow Member of Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), MBA in Finance, a Fellow of Institute of Information Management Africa (Nigeria), Management post-graduation in HRD and a Bachelor of Commerce. He also represents the bank in various leadership forums.
Mr. Kelvin Musana is an Executive Director, Finance and Chief Financial Officer of Standard Chartered Bank Uganda, having been appointed to the role in August 2015.
Mr. Musana is a seasoned finance professional, with over 20 years’ experience in financial accounting and administration having previously served as Financial Controller and Chief Financial Officer / Executive Director, Finance and Administration in Standard Chartered Bank Zambia, one of our four listed subsidiaries in Africa.
He has had working assignments in Tanzania, Uganda, UK, Nigeria and Kenya (on secondment to Save the Children International). He is also a past member of the Board of the Zambia Revenue Authority, past member of the Audit and Risk committee of the Radiation Protection Agency and Institute of Directors, a Council member and Ambassador of the local Zambian ACCA body and a past Treasurer of the Bankers Associations of Zambia. He is currently a member of the ACCA Global Accounting for Business Forum.
Mr. Musana is a Fellow of both the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (“ACCA”) of the United Kingdom (“UK”) and the Zambia Institute of Chartered Accountants (“ZICA”), is a CPA Uganda and a holder of bachelor’s degree in Accountancy from Copperbelt University and an MBA Finance from Manchester Business School.
Mr. Godfrey Sebaana is an Executive Director and Head, Client Coverage, Corporate, Commercial and Institutional Banking of Standard Chartered Bank Uganda. He has a banking experience of 18 years having served at various financial institutions in Uganda and Tanzania.
He has handled several operations ranging from mergers and acquisitions, corporate advisory, structured trade finance and corporate finance across various business segments; retail business, small and medium enterprises, local corporate and regional / multinational corporate business support. Mr. Sebaana is also a member of the Board of Trustees of the Standard Chartered Bank Uganda Pension Fund.
Mr. Sebaana is a qualified accountant and a member of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) UK.
