Things you should know

Crypto, short for cryptocurrency, is a type of digital asset that uses cryptography for security. It operates on decentralized networks called blockchains, which record and verify transactions.

If you have the SC mobile app and a USD or AED account, you can access the crypto currency product on the SC Mobile App. Standard Chartered Bank UAE is licensed by the Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA) to offer cryptocurrency investments where you can buy, sell, and hold cryptocurrencies from your SC mobile app.

The crypto investment product is available only for eligible clients who are deemed as “Professional Investors” by the bank. Please reach out to your relationship manager to understand your investor classification or reach out to us on (+971) 600 5080 00.

You can invest in Bitcoin (BTC) and Ether (ETH) using USD or AED.

To fund your crypto trades or redeem your sell proceeds to, you must have an existing eligible conventional or Saadiq USD or AED account. Clients cannot use Term Deposit accounts, Joint Accounts, or other currency accounts to neither fund their crypto trades nor transfer their sell proceeds to.

Yes, you need to make sure you have sufficient funds in your USD or AED account before you start executing an order.

No, SC does not support transfers of crypto holdings to or from SC.

SC currently offers market orders only. You can execute a crypto order by placing a Request for Quote (RFQ). This means we hold the crypto price for you, for a timeframe of 6 seconds, giving you time to review your order before it is executed. If you proceed within the timeframe of 6 seconds, the order will be executed at the price that was locked for you. If you proceed outside the timeframe of 6 seconds, then you will receive a refreshed quote and you can execute your order at the next best price which would be locked in for 6 seconds.

No, your orders cannot be cancelled once they are executed.

No, there are no transaction fees levied on the crypto orders that you place.

USD 50 or equivalent in AED is the minimum order amount to buy or sell crypto.

You can find all your executed orders under the “Transactions” section of your crypto dashboard in the SC mobile app.

Once you sell your crypto holdings, you will be able to receive your sell proceeds in USD or AED to the account of your choosing in real-time.

The crypto investment product is available only for eligible clients who are deemed as “Professional Investors” and meet other criteria as required by the bank. Please reach out to your relationship manager to understand your investor classification or reach out to us on (+971) 600 5080 00.

While completing your registration journey for the crypto investment product, you must ensure that:

  1. Your investor classification is that of a “Professional Investor” (PI).
  2. Your Client Investment Risk Profile (CIP) meets our internal requirements.
  3. Your Tax Residency Information (TIN) is up to date.
  4. Your Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA) declaration is up to date.

If you require further assistance in updating this information, please reach out to your relationship manager or reach out to us on (+971) 600 5080 00.

You should receive a confirmation via email when your trade is executed within 2-3 mins of execution. If you have not received it, please reach out to us on (+971) 600 5080 00.

If you have existing crypto holdings, you will be able to sell them without any restrictions. However, if you wish to buy again, you need to ensure you meet the eligibility criteria to do so.

VA Standards Policy

Standard Chartered Bank (“Standard Chartered” or the “Bank”) is firmly committed to thoroughly evaluating Virtual Assets (VAs) before offering any services related to them. For each VA, Standard Chartered will conduct an assessment that goes beyond technological and regulatory checks to ensure full compliance with all applicable regulatory requirements.

Scope:

These standards aim to provide a single and consistent approach for the Bank to assess the inherent risk of a VA including its protocol (i.e. network) and any tokens (i.e. coins or currencies) associated with the VA so they may be considered for use in the Bank’s products and services, or the Bank’s own VA holdings. These Standards describe a non-exhaustive list of relevant risk factors which may be present in VAs, and minimum requirements to perform a VA risk assessment against these risk factors which must be met prior to a VA’s approval or rejection for admittance by Standard Chartered.

Assessment of Each VA

Standard Chartered shall provide its services only in respect of VAs that have been approved by the Bank. Before the approval of any VA in relation to which the Bank provides services, the Bank shall undertake a due diligence exercise and assessment of the particular VA in accordance with the procedures set out below.

Evaluation of VAs:

  • Technology Evaluation: The Bank will undertake a comprehensive technology evaluation that ensures, but is not limited to, that the VA is sufficiently decentralised, high levels of consensus performance is met, no instances of network downtimes and has high levels of community engagement within the developer community This evaluation will also consider the VA’s compatibility with industry standards and best practices.
  • Governance Evaluation: The Bank will conduct an evaluation of the governance structure of the VA where VAs must have clear and transparent development roadmaps, frequent communication of major changes, successful implementation of critical upgrades, and incentive models aligned with the fundamental vision of the VA.
  • Reputational, Environment & Social Impact Evaluation: The Bank shall assess the reputational and ESG impacts of VAs to ensure that, but not limited to, the fundamental vision is to improve the financial inclusion, does not require high energy usage to reach consensus and overall no adverse media or pending regulatory actions concerning any of the key entities or individuals involved.
  • Risk Management Evaluation – The Bank will assess the VA’s terms and conditions, market capitalisation, fully diluted value, liquidity, whether these metrics have declined over time, and, where the VA represents rights to other assets, the enforceability of those rights. It will evaluate the VA’s design, features, and use cases (whether or not intended by the issuer or relevant developers), as well as any factors that may make the VA susceptible to price manipulation. The Bank will also take into account the VA’s prospective development (e.g., any “roadmap”) as communicated by the issuer and/or relevant developers. This will support the Bank in implementing appropriate mitigations for the risks identified. In addition, SC will consider the background of the VA’s issuer, including but not limited to the issuer’s relevant experience in the VA sector and whether it has been subject to any investigations or claims relating to fraud or deceit.
