Investing in Communities

We collaborate with local partners to support social and economic development in our communities. Across our markets we work with local communities to deliver programmes focused on health and education. UAE also supports The Bank to raise funds for Seeing is Believing, the Bank's global programme to prevent and treat avoidable blindness. Our cumulative fundraising for SiB from 2003 to 2016 is $92.8 million and the total number of people impacted is 133.8 million. We also offer our staff three days paid leave to volunteer to help give back to their local communities. Our community programmes are an important part of our Sustainability Aspirations. In 2017 and beyond, we will continue to take forward our commitments to raise $100 million for Seeing is Believing by 2020, reach 600,000 girls through Goal and train 5,000 micro and small businesses by the end of 2018.

Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon
Standard Chartered Marathon

The five star Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon is a flagship event that attracts thousands of runners from all over the world who join the race with their own #ReasonsToRun. Some run to raise awareness about cancer, some want to get back in shape and some want to simply challenge themselves. In 2017, in a true spirit of the Year of Giving and living in with our brand promise Here for good, Standard Chartered UAE has brought the concept of “giving” to the next level, Standard Chartered UAE’s main reason is to raise awareness about the Rashid Paediatric Centre. The non-profit organisation provides education and therapy to children with special needs, with unique programmes designed to meet each child’s needs. To further raise awareness about this initiative, Standard Chartered UAE was joined by a well-known Emirati fitness guru Walid Yari, an award winning Emirati comedian Bin Baz and a lifestyle blogger Taim Al Falasi. In addition, the Standard Chartered UAE’s Leadership team will be personally involved in raising awareness and funds for the centre. We’ve had over 30,000 participants from all over the world and Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon which has produced many surprise winners lived up to its reputation on Friday, 20 January 2017, for the 13th year in a row.

Every year we always ask the people what is your reason to run? In 2017 we wanted to do something different by giving people that reason which is the Rashid Paediatric Centre. We were joined by some of the biggest so UAE social influencers: an award winning Emirati comedian Bin Baz, a popular lifestyle blogger Taim Al Falasi and a well known Emirati fitness guru Walid Yari.

Fighting avoidable blindness with Seeing is Believing

Every five seconds, someone, somewhere in the world goes blind. Every minute, one more child goes blind - ninety percent of blind children don't attend school. Seeing is Believing is Standard Chartered's global programme to tackle avoidable blindness. We have committed to raise USD100 million by 2020, of which we have already raised USD95 million since 2003 including dollar matching, through which we aim to help eliminate avoidable blindness and visual impairment. UAE has raised over USD1.9mn for Seeing is Believing since the launch of the programme. In 2016, UAE alone have raised USD289,250 to support Seeing is Believing. We remain enthusiastic in supporting this programme and meeting our global target by 2020.
