Ryan’s Story: Thriving as a Frontend Developer at Standard Chartered

What was it like entering the corporate world for the first time?

As a fresh graduate, I was excited to finally use my knowledge and skills in a professional setting. Thanks to the supportive environment and comprehensive onboarding programme provided by the Bank, the transition was smooth and I have been able to thrive. So far, it has been a fulfilling journey of growth and learning in a dynamic corporate environment.

What drew you to a technology career in banking? 

As someone with a background in business, I have always been fascinated by how technology intersects with other industries. The banking sector particularly intrigued me because of its significant reliance on technology and digital solutions to drive innovation, transform traditional financial services, and enhance customer experiences.

Why did you choose to start your career at Standard Chartered? 

Standard Chartered's reputation for innovation and its global presence were compelling factors. Working with a diverse team of colleagues from different backgrounds and cultures meant that I could expand my horizons and gain new perspectives.

The Bank's investment in employee learning and growth has also been an instrumental factor. Since joining the Bank, I have had the opportunity to take various online courses, regardless of whether they are aligned with my role.

I appreciate Standard Chartered’s commitment to diversity and inclusion. Stepping into a bank as a male with long hair and piercings might go against stereotypes associated with working in a bank, but here, I have always felt supported and welcomed from day one (I even got compliments for my stylish hair!). The Bank is truly a place where individuals can bring their authentic selves to work.

Is there anything that would surprise people about working for a large bank?

As a large bank, it is important to stay ahead in a rapidly evolving industry. Apart from driving success for our customers, the success of employees is equally vital. The Bank provides ample opportunities for employees to upskill and improve. From specialised training programmes to mentorship initiatives, employees' growth is valued, and this enables them to thrive in their careers and contribute effectively. The Bank even has its own in-house academy, aXess Academy, which frequently provides training opportunities and resources that employees can register for at their own free will and interest.

How would you describe the culture at Standard Chartered?

Vibrant and dynamic! The office itself follows a hot-desking model, where employees have the freedom to choose their workspace for spontaneous collaboration and the exchange of ideas with colleagues across departments. There is also a strong emphasis on community and volunteering. Employees are encouraged to contribute their time to meaningful causes beyond the corporate walls. I had the opportunity to participate in a dance performance during the Bank’s annual “Dinner and Dance”. We partnered up with disabled children to perform, which was extremely meaningful and fulfilling.

What is your favourite thing about your job in the technology team?

From day one, I quickly found myself surrounded by talented colleagues who were willing to mentor and guide me. This significantly helped me to adapt, get up to speed, and start contributing to the team as soon as possible.

What advice would you give to someone looking to work at Standard Chartered?

Embrace a growth mindset. The Bank values individuals who are open to growth and have a passion for continuous learning. Demonstrate your eagerness to learn, adapt, and embrace new challenges! Showcase your collaborative skills. Collaboration is a key aspect of the Bank's culture. Highlight your ability to work effectively in teams and communicate ideas clearly. Being a global bank, it would be important to emphasise possible experience in cross-functional teams and your ability to build strong working relationships with your colleagues.

How should someone prepare for an interview with Standard Chartered?

Demonstrate technological fluency. Whether you are applying to a technical role or not, it will be useful to showcase your appreciation for technology and your ability to adapt to technological advancements. A good example of this is how the introduction of ChatGPT significantly evolved the way we work in such a short period of time. It will also be helpful to highlight any previous experience or projects that demonstrate your understanding of how technology can drive innovation in the financial sector. Research and understand the Bank's values. Familiarise yourself with our mission and values, and demonstrate your understanding of the Bank's strategic priorities.

What would you say to a graduate who is nervous about the value they can bring to their role, being straight out of university?

For a graduate who may feel anxious about the value they can bring to their role fresh out of university, I would like to reassure them that it's perfectly normal to have some nerves. Embrace the incredible opportunities for growth and learning that lie ahead. Have confidence in the unique perspectives and fresh ideas you bring to the table. Don't be afraid to make mistakes, as they are valuable learning experiences that contribute to your professional development. Trust that your team is more than willing to share their knowledge so you can seamlessly assimilate into the team. Always maintain a can-do attitude and believe that you were chosen for a reason. Remember, every seasoned professional was once a fresh entry, just like you, embarking on an exciting journey of growth and success.
